Tunde Kelani popularly known as Tk, veteran Film Maker, Cinematography, Photography and recently appointed Chairman of the Board of National Film and Video Censors Board on 26th February turned a septuagenarian and was celebrated by the arts community in a four- day event from 5th to 8th of March 2018 in Lagos.
The event which was jointly organized by Irep Documentary Film forum, Committee for Relevant Arts (CORA) in collaboration with the National Film and Video Censors Board, Golden Effects, Pisces audio visual Limited etc at the Freedom park, by Broad street, Lagos.
At the grand finale, held on Thursday 8th March 2018, eight hours tagged ‘ARTHOUSE FORUM’ was declared at a stretch in honor of T K .The event commenced with screening of one of T Ks short movies ,‘ The white handkerchief’ adopted from the virgin , a novel by Bayo Adebowale and shot in 1998. The movie was dedicated to the women day celebration. Other activities to spice up the event included conversations, tributes sessions, screening of documentary on life and works of TK and a reception .
In the course of the conversation with the celebrant, two of T Ks long time friends, Segun Odegbami, a veteran footballer and Dr Tunde Adegbola, a Lecturer, at the University of Ibadan spoke glowingly about TK and praised him for his determination and hard work. They spoke on their relationship, collaborations, Ideas, engagements and how they played one role or the other in Kelanis works.
Also during the session, several tributes poured in. Actor, Yemi Sodinmu who has featured in several of TKs works described him as God’s gift to Nigeria and African works of art in general.
Others praised him for promoting the African Culture particularly the Yoruba culture in movies .He was also praised for constantly adopting literary works into movies. In response, TK appreciated everyone, noting that, ‘it has been a long journey and without you, there wouldn’t be a TK’.
Film producer cum actor, Kunle Afolayan did a documentary on TK entitled, ‘Tunde Kelani: A Culture Connoisseur’ which was screened. According to Afolayan he put together the documentary to share a bit of what he shares with TK. He also spoke well of TK, according to him, with TK there is no age barrier as he regarded everyone, there is no separation between old and the young. He accommodates all irrespective of age.
Short clips from some of his works like Arugba , Soworoide , Campus queen, Dazzling Mirage ,Maami, Thunderbolt , Narrow path etc were shown which gave the audience a taste of some of his works.
Highlights of the celebration was the screening of Tunde Kalani’s latest work, entitled Sidi Ilujunle, an adaptation of Professor Wole Soyinkas book ‘ the Lion and the Jewel. There was dance, Music etc.
The event was graced by Professor Wole Soyinka, Producers Femi Odegbami, Ali Mahmud Balogun, Actors like Yemi Sodimu, Bimbo Manuel and others. Also Zonal Coordinator of the South West Zone, Mr. Edward Edion and other officers of the Board attended .
